You Are More Than My Client!

ree

As a photographer, my role extends far beyond merely snapping photos; it’s about forging meaningful connections. One of my favorite things about being a photographer is seeing my clients outside of our sessions — whether it’s in the grocery store, at a local event, or just around town. I love the chance to say hi and see how everyone is doing. Those little moments remind me how special this job really is — because it’s not just about the photos. It’s about the connections that come with them.

When I recognize familiar faces, it reinforces my belief that photography isn't just a service; it’s a collaborative journey. Each client brings a unique narrative, and I feel honored to be part of their visual history.

The Importance of Connection

When I photograph families year after year, I get to see kids grow up in front of my camera — from shy smiles in the beginning to full-on goofiness once they realize they can just be themselves with me. That comfort level makes such a huge difference during future sessions. Instead of feeling like “picture day,” it feels more like spending time with a friend who happens to have a camera. Building a rapport with my clients is crucial for creating authentic photographs. When people, children especially, feel comfortable during a photoshoot, it brings out their true selves. This comfort transforms what could be a stiff session into a playful and relaxed environment where genuine moments shine.

I often find that the best images arise from unexpected laughter, spontaneous interactions, and candid moments. For instance, at a recent family session, I observed siblings interacting naturally, laughing together as they played tag. When kids forget about the camera, their personalities truly come alive, resulting in images that reflect their essence.

When clients feel comfortable around me, they let their guard down and that's when the magic happens.

I'll often have casual conversations with clients to take them out of the headspace of a photoshoot and help them feel like I'm just part of the landscape. That's the best way to get real authenticity and then it doesn't feel forced.

Building Long-Term Relationships

Photography is often perceived as a one-off service, but I aim to cultivate long-lasting relationships with my clients. I want them to feel free to contact me for family portraits, special events, or just to share updates about their lives. I'm actually a counsellor as well, and sometimes when people learn this they feel like a relationship has already started and they might come see me for therapy services. Who better to take your photos and talk about your problems with than the same person? There's a comfort there that is generated through real rawness.

I don't say this because I want you to only book me. We have so many awesome photographers in the area and we all excel at different things. I love seeing them supported as well! What I want you to know is that I don't consider photography to be a one-and-done deal. The best feeling is continued interactions with clients that I carry into future shoots.

A Lasting Connection

In the realm of photography, my clients are far more than mere subjects; they are friends and collaborators. I treasure the connections we build outside of shoots, as they enrich both our lives and artistic work. When kids feel at ease during our sessions, it transforms the experience into something extraordinary. It allows me to capture their true personalities, producing images that tell unique stories.

So, the next time you see me out and about, don’t hesitate to stop and say hello! I’ll probably light up seeing your familiar faces, and if your kids wave or come running over, know that it makes my day. Those small connections outside of the studio are what build the trust and familiarity that make every photo session special. I am always eager to catch up and hear about your latest adventures. You are more than just a client; you are a vital part of my photography journey, and I cherish every moment we share.
